Diabetes club formally inaugurated on 21.1.1975 at Townhall by Sri Kengal Hanumanthaiah Ex Chief Minister & Central Minister. The meeting was presided over by Sri T. Siddalingaiah Ex Minister & Ex Congress President & Freedom Fighter. Chief Guests (who were in Bangalore to attend API Conference) during the inaugural function were: Dr. Hari Vaishnav from New Delhi and Dr. B.B. Tripathy from Cuttack.
Diabetes club was started as a self-help group for the patients with diabetes mellitus, to share their concerns with fellow diabetics, they met regularly at the premises of Specialist clinic on Old Madras bank road opposite to St. Joseph’s European school. The first Diabetes clinic in Karnataka was started here by Dr.C.Munichoodappa, & a free diabetic clinic for the socio economically weaker section was started even earlier to 1974, on December 6 th 1973. This was continued to be run till the hospital was started on every Thursday between 3-4 p.m. The patients were given free advice, free or subsidized insulin supply.
The Bangalore Diabetes Hospital was conceived soon after the diabetes club formed in 1974. The then founder Secretary Mr. W.A. Sundara Murthy had already applied to the Bangalore City Corporation for a Civic Site some time in 1975-76. In 1978 when Late N. Laxman Rao was the administrator a site was allotted to Diabetes Club in Miller Tank Bed Area along with the other social organizations.
The site was allotted to establish a hospital or an institution to undertake for treatment and research in diabetes. (on the lines Joslin Clinic of Boston where Dr.C.Munichoodappa was trained from July 1968 to June 1970).
The Change of land use was obtained by the efforts of Dr.K.R.Narasimha Setty.
Bhoomi Pooja was performed on the 22nd February 2004 by Dr.(Mrs) Leela Munichoodappa & Dr. C. Munichoodappa. The construction of the hospital was initiated in April 2004. Sri, Rajeshwarasashtry was an active executive member and helped by the way of donations and he personally inspected and oversaw the construction of the building.
All the office bearers, members of the executive committee and members of diabetes club gave contributed and offered selfless service to construct the building and towards its activities.
We are thankful to those who liberally donated included Dr. G.C.Surana of Micro Labs, Infosys Foundation Mrs. Sudha Murthy, Mr. K.P. Balasubramanyam, Dasappa & Sons, Dr. M. Gurudas family and Mr. Kupparaju of Hotel Chancery.
Diabetes Club has conducted diabetes camps in various places namely Chintamani, Maddur, Channpatna, Ramnagar, Kanakapura, Devanahalli,. Doddaballapura, Chickaballapur, Vijayapura, Hassan, KGF, Tirupur in Tamil Nadu and many other places. During these times awareness programs were also arranged with the help of local Lions & Rotary Clubs.
All these activities of Diabetes Club was carried out through Bangalore Diabetes Hospital starting in October 2007, Which then added eye care facilities with the help of Shradha Eye Care Trust and renamed the hospital ‘The Bangalore Diabetes & Eye Hospital’.
Presently Dr R Anil Kumar is the president and Dr Karthik Munichoodappa is the secretary of Diabetes club.
To educate the Diabetics and others in the matter of control and treatment of Diabetics.
To establish a library, publish literature, pamphlets etc., for use of Diabetics.
To promote research in the field of Diabetes by financing Scholars in the field of Medicine, award of Scholarships to deserving Post Graduate Doctors specializing in Diabetes and obtain a cure for the disease.
To arrange lectures, film shows, discussions, symposia, Seminars and (conduct survey for detecting diabetes) in persons unaware of its existence.
To arrange for procurement, at cheaper/subsidized rates of articles of necessity like wheat, Insulin and other drugs to Diabetics.
To arrange for starting of Free consultation services to poor and deserving in regard to diagnosis and treatment of Diabetes at one or more centres.
To start Diabetic Clinic cum Research Centre to provide facilities for Research, consultation or In/Out patient treatment to those suffering from Diabetes and
In short to promote and undertake all activities essential for the welfare of Diabetic patients.
Organize awareness programs, workshops, and exhibitions to educate and engage the community on diabetes care.
Continuing Medical Education sessions to update healthcare professionals on the latest diabetes advancements.
Conduct free diabetes screening and management camps for early detection and better health outcomes.
Community initiatives promoting diabetes awareness, prevention, and holistic care for underserved populations.
